A chocolatey Harry Specters surprise
I was lucky enough to receive some chocolates in the post (thanks Sue), and was so impressed I had to write about them. I hadn’t heard of the brand before - Harry Specters - but what a lovely back story to discover.
Founders Mona and Shaz started the company from their kitchen in 2012. Their son Ash, who has autism, is the inspiration behind the brand and the one who came up with the name. They were worried about Ash’s future, so took matters into their own hands to empower him and others with ASD to find and sustain employment.
The award-winning chocolates (36 awards in 5 years, including Great Taste that I judge) are made using the freshest ingredients and ethical cocoa. They contain no artificial preservatives or flavours and are all gluten-free. What’s more, they are each little works of art - handcrafted and decorated beautifully.
The chocolate factory is based in Cambridgeshire, where autistic people are involved in every aspect of the business – from production and packaging of the products to administration, design and photography. This equates to 13,162 hours of employment for 33 ASD employees over the past three years.
Thankfully, the quality of the chocolates matched the quality of the brand story. We enjoyed the ‘Bit of Everything’ box containing 12 handcrafted chocolates, which was a treat from start to finish. Gorgeous packaging and branding, good quality chocolate, creative, flavoursome fillings and a stunning visual display of colour, shape and pattern.
