Crickets
It’s Mother’s Day, but my Mother’s away, so instead of having a lovely roast dinner I decided to eat bugs. The box of crickets has been gracing the kitchen table for almost a week, much to the disgust of Rob when he came for dinner. Sadly, most of the crickets lost body parts on the long journey from Devon, and I was faced with a box of dismembered bits. The main bodies were good – crunchy, tasty little salt and vinegary morsels – if a bit dry. But the wings were the best bits, light and sunflower-seed-like. I spent the rest of the evening retrieving bits from my mouth, much like when I’ve been eating popcorn, making it the snack that keeps on giving. As I type, I have just coughed up a leg. Overall, the crickets were surprisingly satisfying. I only intended to try one or two in the name of experimentation, but ended up eating them all.
